Liverpool still Struggling – Why ? Hodgson or Benitez

Posted by admin

Liverpool lost again at home tonight and they are back in crisis.  Losing at home to Wolves is unacceptable to Liverpool fans and they are rebelling against Roy Hodgsons management with some even clamouring for the return of Benitez.

To compare Hodgson to Benitez is difficult and unfair.  Benitez had loads of time and boat loads of money and left Hodgson with not much to show for it.  Hodgson is charged with turning the remnants of Benitez’s side into a force with no opportunity to build his own team. He has had little time or support to do anything of his own making. It doesn’t seem as though he will be around long enough to spend any money on his own team.  I feel Liverpool made a wise choice to appoint an English manager and one that knows his way around both the Premier League and Europe.

I find it quite remarkable that anyone would press for Rafa to return.  He has been shown the door by Liverpool and Inter Milan in very quick succession and really has done nothing in recent times to justify the confidence some people have in him. Live Football Online

I hope that Roy Hodgson still gets a chance to do the job he has been appointed to do.  He has some top players that are not performing.  Fernando Torres and Joe Cole are very good players that have done virtually nothing this season for Hodgson.  The owners have to decide whether the manager is to blame or whether they should sell some of these players and get people that would be more interested in performing.  Unfortunately Hodgson sounds like a beaten man in his interviews and he needs to pick himself up as well as the players.

I hope they don’t go down the route of appointing another foreign manager as I think it is bad for the future of the English game and one good thing Liverpool have tried to do is to get back to a more English base.

Liverpool Panic Is a Bit Premature

Posted by admin

Liverpool in the bottom three is a sight that few of their supporters can ever have seen before but the current crisis talk as far as results are concerned is a bit premature.

Don’t get me wrong that have plenty to sort out but they are only 5 points out of the top 4 spots too. If you are an optimist they are only a couple of wins off the pace.  It is far from a crisis yet but is not helped by the widely held frustration and even hatred felt towards their American owners. Losing at home to Blackpool is not something that many would have expected so it has caused a little bit of a stir this weekend.  Unfortunately they really didn’t show enough fight to encourage their supporters on this occasion and now they have an international break denying them the opportunity to go out and redeem themselves quickly.  Those of us that enjoy the intensity of these situations find international breaks very annoying.

The next match is an absolute corker with Liverpool making the short trip across the park to Everton who are only above them in the table on goal difference. Whoever loses will be in the bottom three in three weeks time so both Liverpool and Everton will be desperate for a result.

Losing a merseyside derby would add even further pressure on Roy Hodgson however he is a very sensible and measured manager and will know how to cope with the situation.  He got Fulham out of an almost impossible position when he took over there so I am sure he can cope with this early season set back given the chance.  He needs the backing and understanding of the fans which Liverpool are tradionally famous for and a bit of time.  It only takes one performance to get the momentum going. So much the better if it is at Goodison Park against the old enemy.

Rafa s got more lives than a cat

Posted by admin

It seems every few matches that I think to myself ‘that must be it for Rafa! ‘  He is making a mess of things on a very consistent basis but he seems to keep getting away with it.   It surely can’t last much longer.  His next two matches are both massive tests of character.  Stoke away is not for the faint hearted at the best of times. He will do well to get a draw there. Then a few days later its Spurs at home. That is usually a home win but at the moment Spurs are looking considerably stronger than the reds.

If they were to lose either of these I would think they could say goodbye to the champions league spot, particularly the Spurs game as it really widen the gap between the two teams.

Unfortunately for Benitez he has Torres and Gerrard injured again for the matches.  He can’t pull in his most imaginative player Benayoun either as he is also injured.  Not that he has been using him as much as he could anyway. He is frustratingly unadventurous in his philosophy.

His biggest problem though is that he really has no goal threat without those three players.  He might get an odd goal from Kuyt or Babel, if selected, but they can’t be thinking they will score regularly.

Unfortunately he has sold plenty of strikers that are still playing well in the Premiership and not replaced them.  He should be embarrassed that Craig Bellamy, Peter Crouch, Robbie Keane, Emile Heskey, Michael Owen are all top strikers at clubs that are doing better than Liverpool.

Its all very well saying he needs to be given money to invest in players but at some point he is going to have to be held accountable for wasting the resources he has already been given. It is undeniable that the strength of the squad has diminished in his charge.

Chelsea vs Liverpool (2-0) Full Highlights, FA Premier League (4-10-2009)

Second-half goals from Nicolas Anelka and Florent Malouda gave Chelsea a deserved 2-0 victory over Liverpool and put them two points clear at the top of the Premier League.

The France international struck first in the 60th minute when he finished off a sublime low cross from Didier Drogba as Chelsea defied their critics with a performance of grit and quality. Substitute Malouda sealed the win in injury-time when he slid home another low cross from Drogba.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side were desperate to get back to winning ways in the league after their 3-1 drubbing by Wigan last week and a lacklustre victory over Apoel Nicosia in the Champions League in midweek.

But it was Liverpool who had the best of the early exchanges and the game sparked into life in the 12th minute when Fernando Torres was fortunate not to receive a yellow card for a late challenge on Chelsea captain John Terry. The Spaniard’s right foot was clearly too high and raked the shins of the England defender.

However, referee Martin Atkinson opted to give the Liverpool striker a lengthy lecture, much to the annoyance of the home fans.

Liverpool continued to dominate but a shot from Albert Riera was high and wide of the target in the 19th minute.
