Eduardos sloppy backheel let in Liege forward Mangala to score before the Gunners new goalkeeper Mannone had managed a touch. To compound the error Gallas made a clumsy challenge to give away a fith minute penalty which was duly converted by Jovanic.

Arsenal now had a mountain to climb but set about it in relentless style. They managed to get their reward just before halftime when Bendter struck to give them a lift going in. The second goal was a touch fortunate as it could easily have been disallowed for offside or handball but was allowed to stand much to the belgian keepers disgust. Now there really was one team in it and Arsenal pushed on until Eduardo finally got the winner with clever use of his thigh to direct the ball in. He made up for his early mistake and won the game for the away side.
An away win to start the campaign can’t be bad and Arsenal can now be confident of going through the first group without a problem.
